I started to think about the idea of making a video score in 2001 whilst making collaborative works with musicians from Africa. I began to think about hypothetical strategies for developing pieces that allow performers either to utilise or challenge their own methods in performance. More recently, I decided to make a miniature video piece that could be reinterpreted in many ways, almost like a cell, presenting endless variety and possibilities. I have tried to make something which can be performed by musicians from any background, but which will always present creative challenges in performance. The visual nature of the piece, although not narrative, is designed to be simple and transparent so that the audience can have access to the choices of the musicians, creating an emergent structure that is different every time. This short structure can be performed up to three times in one un-interrupted performance. I would eventually like to record several performances with different performing groups in order to understand more about the ways that visual information might influence improvisational choices. The video footage was shot whilst travelling around London on foot, by car and on the train.
